Teaching Statement excerpt
My teaching style is a direct reflection of my experiences in education, both as a student and as a teacher.
As a student, I learned best, and with the greatest excitement, when information was in service of a larger project. Now as an arts educator, I have explored the theories behind Project Based Learning and have seen the value to my students. As a teaching artist, I have focused on creating arts integration curricula and building social-emotional learning practices.
My work as a director is influenced by my training in Viewpoints. While I regularly rely on my Viewpoints training in my work as a director, I often use Viewpoints as a classroom framework for building class projects.
My teaching methods are a reflection of my training and experiences. Far from being a purist, I have collected ideologies that have worked well for me, and sewn them together into a single pedagogy. My style is a patchwork of experiences. At the end of the day, I want students to find the same excitement and joy in this work that I have found. I enjoy learning and sharing ideas with my students, which is why I continue to teach. To share ideas and grow in the process.
